Is coaching right for you?  What is coaching?  Isn’t it the same as counselling?

Questions and answers to consider

Richard is a Co-Active coach - what’s that about? ‍ ‍

Developed in 1992 by the Co-Active Training Institute, the Co-Active model is one of the oldest, most established, and widely recognized coaching methodologies in the professional world. Grounded in a rigorous, time-tested framework that treats you as naturally creative, resourceful, and whole, it remains a gold standard you can entirely trust. Millions of leaders and individuals globally rely on this proven approach for deep, lasting personal transformation. Simply put, it is a framework through which a certified coach supports a client in achieving goals and finding deep fulfilment in their life and purpose.

Why is it called Co-Active? ‍ ‍

This coaching model is called Co-Active because the coach and coachee/client are equal partners in the process. The 'Co' means we work together to explore your depth, values, and who you want to be. The 'Active' means we turn those insights into real, goal-oriented or forward action.

What makes Co-Active coaching different from other methods?‍ ‍

Co-Active coaching is built on the foundational principle that you are naturally creative, resourceful, and whole. I do not arrive with a checklist to fix you; instead, we partner as equals to unlock the insights and answers you already possess.

What can I expect to experience during a typical coaching session?

Every session is an active collaboration supported by powerful questioning, deep listening, and forward-focused action. We look at your whole life to seek balance as well as key topics you want coaching on. These could be about your work, career or a specific goal. It could be something about your personal life or a step you know you want to take. The coaching process aligns your choices with your deepest values.

How will I know this is a safe process? ‍ ‍

A Co-Active coach will establish what is called a ‘Designed Alliance’ very early in the coaching process. It is a key aspect we build together by explicitly discussing how you want to be coached, how we will handle challenges, and how to create a workspace where you feel completely safe. Checking in and listening to your feedback is a necessary part of the session. You are in control of the experience.

Professional Scope & Ethics

Is coaching a substitute for therapy or counselling? Coaching is not a substitute for professional mental health services. Therapy and counselling services may focus on healing past trauma, emotional pain, and psychological issues to restore daily functioning. Coaching is future-focused, assuming baseline mental wellness, and aims to optimize your growth and potential.

What ethical standards do you follow?‍ ‍

I strictly adhere to the International Coaching Federation (ICF) Code of Ethics. This includes maintaining strict client confidentiality, absolute transparency regarding my role, and prioritizing your well-being above all else.

What happens if my needs fall outside the scope of coaching?‍ ‍

As an ethical, certified Co Active coach, I am trained to spot when a client’s needs exceed my professional boundaries. If issues regarding deep emotional distress or mental health blockages arise, I have an ethical obligation to refer you to a qualified therapist.

What are my primary protections as a client?‍ ‍

You are protected by our written Coaching Agreement, which clearly details the scope of services, payment structures, and cancellation rules. Your personal and business data are kept strictly confidential, and you retain full autonomy over your choices at all times.

What is expected of me before we begin?‍ ‍

You would come with a readiness to be open, curious, and accountable for your own growth. Coaching is an investment of time and energy and lasting change requires your active willingness to experiment with new behaviours outside our coaching sessions.

Can we end the coaching agreement early if it isn't working?‍ ‍

Yes, our agreement will include a clear clause outlining how either party can pause or terminate the coaching relationship if the alliance no longer serves your goals.
